Day 12, Warner Springs Resupply

Day 12, 3/28/20, mile 116

I swear that was the coldest f-ing night yet. Others seemed to agree. What happened!? Since I had to shop a little and stop at the PO, they made for an easy excuse to stay in the cozy warm sleeping bag until the sun hit the campsite. The road walk east into Warner Springs is scary, and the number of rigs hauling dirt bikes, quads, side-by-sides and rock crawlers to Ocotillo Wells is astounding. There’s a wad of cash right there.

Approaching the store, a customer getting gas actually gave me a compliment on my shirt. Something to the effect of I was very presentable. Surely he must jest, but he was serious. Once I realized that, I apoligized for forgetting my tie at camp. And then I thanked him. The “store” is a gas station mini-mart. In a normal year it isn’t the best and reserved for snacky type foods. Add in Covid 19, and it gets weirder. One person inside at a time, limited purchase quantities, and a cashier who seems really afraid and loves to talk about how EVERYTHING is closed (or about to be). I didn’t really get yelled at, but someone I know mentioned “Soup Nazi”. ‘Nuff said.

The stop at the historic church on the way back to camp restored my faith in humanity. Nobody around, no locks on the door, open to the public at all hours. And a bathroom with running water, soap and sink. We did what we could by sweeping out the bathroom and leaving a donation in the box. I may not subscribe to any particular religion, but I can appreciate the kindness enacted upon complete strangers. Again, another blessing staring me in the face. That certainly changed my mood about Warner Springs.

The walk out of town was up a valley with lots of creek crossings. After 5 miles or so, we bagged a site close to the crick. My homies that know my garage will understand the “Open” pic. Sunny evening was glorious as well as time talking with my trail friends.
